Funeral Service for a Veteran:

When a veteran dies, his or her survivors may be entitled to veteran funeral benefits.  Some of the benefits include:

  •  Grave site in any of the 135 National Cemeteries across the country
  • Military funeral honors
  •  Opening and closing of the grave
  • Perpetual care
  • A government head stone
  • A burial flag

All these are provided to the family at no cost, but the veteran must meet the eligibility requirements. These benefits may also be available to the surviving spouse and dependents, even if they precede the veteran in death.

In some cases, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs will pay partial reimbursement of an eligible Veteran’s burial and funeral cost. The amount varies and is determined by if the death is service related or not.

Because grave sites in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) national cemeteries cannot be reserved in advance, it is our recommendation to make pre-arrangements with a funeral home. Families should be made aware of the wishes of the veteran and have knowledge of where the discharge paperwork is kept. This paperwork, specially the DD214 Report of Separation, is very important in establishing the eligibility.
