Marc Sandofsky, 78, of Jamaica Plain, passed away on September 5, 2026. Marc was born December 19, 1947, to Jessie and Harry Sandofsky. He grew up in Mattapan.
As a child, his family lived upstairs from the Schlossberg Funeral Home, which was owned by his mother’s family. He attended the Paulina A. Shaw Elementary School and split his summers between the West End House Camp and his family’s cottage at Nantasket Beach, where he would spend every summer for the rest of his life.
Marc attended Boston Latin School for just one year before transferring to Boston Technical High School and graduating with honors in 1965. He edited and wrote for the school magazine, The Artisan, an experience that would influence him to write throughout his life.
Marc then attended Tufts University, where he pledged Phi Epsilon Pi and double majored in engineering and economics, happily staying an extra year to complete his second major and avoid the draft.
After college, Marc became a magazine publisher in New York, serving as editor-in-chief of College Monthly Magazine, a publication he started with his friend from Tufts, Paul Hurley. Marc also ran a hi-fi store in Ridgewood, New Jersey, before returning to Boston in the late 1970s.
In 1979, Marc was selected by the United States Olympic Committee to serve as co-chairman of the Massachusetts State Olympic Organization. Through his co-chairmanship, he had the privilege of giving Jesse Owens a personal guided tour of Boston. They had dinner at Anthony’s Pier 4 restaurant, where Marc was a regular at the time.
Marc was also friends with professional wrestler Walter “Killer” Kowalski, with whom he once produced a wrestling match at Quincy Market. He often reminisced about those times and taught his sons the “Kowalski Claw,” a move Killer was famous for.
Later in life, Marc was a prolific writer on the subject of energy conservation. He was published in the Chicago Sun-Times, Store Equipment and Design, and ACHR News, among others, and authored several unpublished novels.
Marc was predeceased by his son Adam Sandofsky, his sister Marilyn Richman, and his parrot Ralph, who was his companion for thirty years. He is survived by his two sons, Matthew and Benjamin Sandofsky; his grandsons, Ethan and Isaac Sandofsky; his four ex-wives, Karen, Joyce, Nancy, and Susan; and his beloved dog Peanut, whom he affectionately referred to simply as “dog.”
Marc will be sorely missed.
Funeral services will be held at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill, 824 Washington St., Canton, MA on Thursday, September 10, at 12:30PM with interment following at Shara Tfilo Cemetery, 776 Baker Street, West Roxbury, MA.
Memorial observance information will be made available on the day of the service.
