Saul (Sonny) Shapiro of Canton, longtime resident of Stoughton, and formerly of Dorchester and Mattapan, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022. Sonny spent his last three years at Heights Crossing in Brockton, where he enjoyed everyone’s companionship along with all the events and lively entertainment.
Born in Boston on July 5, 1934, son of the late Arthur and Bertha Shapiro and the nephew of the late Esther Kivell. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Ansel Shapiro. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Donovan of Canton and his son Dr. Michael Shapiro and his wife Laurie Shapiro of Raynham. He leaves behind one granddaughter Ashley Donovan, and three grandsons, Jacob Donovan, Matthew Shapiro and Brian Shapiro. He leaves behind two nieces, Jodi Kelly and her husband Glen Kelly, and Wendy Ansel. One nephew, James Ansel, predeceased him as did his brother-in-law Richard (Dickie) Ansel.
Sonny graduated from Boston Latin School in 1951 and participated in ROTC while attending Boston University. He was active for many years in Cub Scouts, the Sharon Men’s Club and always enjoyed the Boston sports teams. Sonny retired after a long career in the printing business. He traveled to many Islands with his wife Barbara and enjoyed more than twenty winters as a snowbird in Florida. They were both interested in trying new restaurants, playing cards, going to the theater and movies and especially gathering with their friends and family.
Sonny was a kind man and well-liked by his family, friends and his community at Heights Crossing. He will be greatly missed by everyone.
Services will be held at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill, 824 Washington Street, Canton on Monday, December 26, 2022 at 11AM. Interment to follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street in Sharon.
Memorial Observances at the home of Donna Donovan, 33 Wentworth Road in Canton, following services from 1-4 PM.
