Rachel Faith Cohen, of Wellfleet, MA died suddenly on February 24th 2024 at the age of seventy-two. Daughter of Saul Cohen and Gladys Brightman Cohen of Brookline, MA, She was born and raised in Brookline, MA, and lived most of her life in Cambridge MA with periods of time in West Virginia, North Carolina and New York City. An extraordinary cook and lover of food, she made her home the center of her friend and family community. As part of many seminal groups in the 1960s and 1970s including the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, she was an outspoken activist for feminism and civil rights on a local and national scale. A respected photographer in the Boston art community, she photographed scenes of everyday life, parties, and urban landscapes. She was inspired by the nature of Cape Cod, and by cultures wherever she visited – she saw beauty everywhere and in everyone. An accomplished photographic printer, her attention to detail made her a favorite of many local photographers. Beyond photography, she worked at the storied Max’s Kansas City in NYC, as a librarian in Boston and then finally as a specialist at Apple before retiring to Wellfleet. She was a voracious reader with a photographic memory and loved attending live theater, music and the cinema. Her encyclopedic knowledge of performers, directors, writers and artists was unparalleled. Loving wife and partner of nearly forty-eight years to Thomas William Janssen of Wellfleet, MA. Devoted mother to her daughter Ishah Janssen-Faith and her son-in-law Dan Cozzens of Brooklyn, NY and adoring grandmother of Calliope and Meridian. Sister to Linda Loeb and the late Stanley Cohen and Barry Friedman. Rachel was never afraid to speak her mind or to make big leaps of faith to pursue joy. She led a life unimaginable to previous generations, full of adventures, creativity and freedom. She was truly one of a kind. Services will be held graveside at South Wellfleet cemetery in Wellfleet, MA on Thursday, February 29th 2024 at 1pm, arrangements under the direction of Schlossberg Family Chapel on the Hill, Canton MA. In her memory, donations can be made to Planned Parenthood or Southern Poverty Law Center.
