In Loving Memory of Herman Greenfield
Herman Greenfield, a beloved Beacon Hill pharmacist and devoted family man, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026 at the age of 92 surrounded by his family at his home in Hull, MA.
Herman was the son of Bella and Solomon Greenfield and was raised in Malden, Massachusetts. He graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in political science before serving in the military overseas and then going to work for the U.S. Navy and the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., and Cincinnati. After several years he returned to Boston, pursued a degree in pharmacy, and met his loving wife of over sixty years, Sandy (Selma Kaplan).
For many decades, Herman was a familiar and cherished presence in the Beacon Hill community as owner of Gary Drug Co. He worked as a pharmacist well into his eighties. He loved his work deeply and took great pride in caring for the people of the neighborhood. Generations of Beacon Hill residents came to know him not only as their pharmacist, but as a trusted friend. The feeling was mutual—he loved the community as much as they loved him. In a particularly meaningful chapter of his life, his son, Dan, joined him in the pharmacy and the two worked side by side for more than 30 years, continuing a tradition of dedication and care for their customers and neighbors.
Those who knew Herman will remember his warmth, generosity, and sense of humor. He had a passion for politics and tennis, a dedication to helping others, and the ability to create genuine connections with so many people over the years. Above all, nothing mattered more to Herman than his family, whom he raised in Canton, MA.
Herman was predeceased by his brother and best friend, Julian Greenfield, with whom he shared a lifelong bond. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy Greenfield (née Selma Kaplan); his daughter, Toby Greenfield; his daughter, Lisa Greenfield and her husband, Daniel van Ackere, and their son, Julian; his son, Daniel Greenfield and his wife, Susan (Espo) Greenfield, and their sons, Jacob and Eli. Additionally, Herman is remembered by his sister-in-law, Lorraine Greenfield; his brother-in-law, David Kaplan, and his wife, Chris Brown; as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews whose lives he touched throughout the years.
Funeral services will be held at Temple Sinai, 25 Canton Street, Sharon, MA on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at 1:00PM with the interment to follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Dan & Sue Greenfield immediately following the burial through 7PM, continuing on Wednesday from 3-7PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Combined Jewish Philanthropies or the charitable organization of your choice.
