Baruch Dayan Ha’Emet
With great sadness we inform the community of the passing of Eliezer Zomer, z”l, who passed away on Thursday morning, February 8th.
Eli, known affectionately as “Eliko,” was born in Tel-Aviv in 1946 to Chaim and Jenny, who made the harrowing journey from Romania in 1939 to find refuge in the Holy Land. Eli grew up in the dawn of Israel’s independence and embodied the scrappy, adventurous, entrepreneurial spirit of a true sabra — he was a leader in the tzofim (Israeli scouts), got into a lot of good trouble, and served as a paratrooper who liberated Jerusalem in the 1967 Six-Day War. Eli came to the US where he earned a PhD in Biochemistry, the beginning of an incredible, global career in science with numerous patents and papers on biotech and drug development. While in the US, he met Judy (Golub), his partner and wife of 48 years. Eli was Abba to three children Ariel, David & Alisa and an amazing Saba to three grandchildren Zachary, Roxie & Yaara He was the much-loved middle brother of Natan Zomer and Dina Engel and adored by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and colleagues. Eli had a wonderful life — he loved creating, building, gardening, baking, jelly-making, and, above all, he loved his family and Israel.
Services will be held at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel, on the Hill, 824 Washington Street, Canton, on Sunday, February 11, at 10:00 am followed by interment at the Sharon Memorial Park, Jerusalem Section, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon. Zoom link available on request ([email protected]).
Shiva will be at the home of Judy Zomer on Sunday following the burial until 4:00 PM Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings: 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday & Thursday afternoons: 1:00PM -3:00 PM Friday: 11:00-2:00 PM
Donations in memory of Eli can be made to Yad Sarah at https://friendsofyadsarah.org/ or the charity of your choice.

February 10, 2024 at 9:35 pmDear Judy and family…. Barbara and I were shocked to hear of Elie’s passing; may his memory be a blessing to you and the family. המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבלי ציון וירושלים
Elie – I will personally miss you and the many intellectual discussions and debates on numerous topics that we have had over the last 12 or so years. I particularly regret that you will not see the fruits of your labor over many years at Galectin Therapeutics reach the marketplace. Elie, you will be truly missed by all who knew you and knew of your scientific work. May you rest in peace; B’shalom, Elie.
