Alan Spekin May 28, 2026

Alan R. Spekin, age 75, of Brockton, passed away on May 28, 2026 at home surrounded by his loving family. Son to the late Maynard and Frances (Namenson) Spekin, and brother to his predeceased siblings, Donna L. Spekin and Harriet Simpson, Alan is survived by his devoted wife, Lela K. (Jones) Spekin, and his daughters, Hallie K. (Leggatt) LeBlanc and husband Douglas, of Waltham, and Jenise L. (Leggatt) Lucey and her husband Mark, of Great Barrington. He was a beloved, and generous grandfather to Chase and Travis (LeBlanc) and Mallory and Reese (Lucey).

Alan’s life was filled with rich moments. His earliest vocation was as a paper carrier, which he took seriously, and saved money from wisely. As a student at Brockton High School, he was on the swim team, but also practiced judo throughout, competing in nationwide tournaments. He ultimately earned his black belt.

At UMASS Amherst, Alan formed deep and fun friendships with his many fraternity brothers at Phi Sigma Delta, which he maintained throughout his life. As a Physical Education major, Alan would speak fondly of his duty to exercise rats in lieu of attending a class.  He met the love of his life, Lela, during his sophomore year. Alan’s last job “working for someone else” was as a bouncer at a local pub. He graduated from UMASS in 1972.

After college, Alan began his career by driving a canteen truck. Within a short time, he set his sights on building his own company, Al’s Canteen, which grew eventually to ownership of 10 trucks and routes. He married Lela in 1983 and became a loving father to Hallie and Jenise.

Always a deal hunter, Alan enjoyed going out to eat with family and friends, and was a reliable resource for the best prime rib meal. He was a lover of all animals, exotic and domestic, but his prized pet was his white German Shepherd, Kimba. Among his other favorite pets were two iguanas, Iggy and Wendell, who he raised for 14 years. He and Lela enjoyed traveling with friends and family throughout their lives, often to Las Vegas. He was often relied upon for his jokes and entertaining nature. His magic tricks at restaurants, intended to entertain family and other patrons, will be genuinely missed.

Alan was a devout Red Sox fan, regardless of their ability to win.  He was also loyal and consistent in attending local poker games, and spending time with a group of close friends at the Samoset Rod & Gun Club.

In his retirement, Alan found joy in spending time with his four grandchildren. He loved taking extended family trips with them, and generously bestowing gifts. He will always be remembered by them for his playfulness, his warm smile and his lessons about money management.

Services at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill, 824 Washington St., Canton on Tuesday, June 2 at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in West Bridgewater.

Memorial observance will be at Lela Spekin’s home on Tuesday  6 p.m. – 8 p.m., continuing Wednesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
