Eileen Lurie of Newtonville, MA, formerly of Little Falls, NJ, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2024 at the age of 89 and a half. Devoted daughter of the late Martin and Rose Weiss. Loving mother of Nancy Lurie Berger and her husband Cliff Berger of Needham, MA, Leslie Lurie of Sacramento, CA, and Erika Lurie of Needham, MA. Cherished grandmother of Allison, Emily, and Stephanie Berger. Dear sister of Marilyn Aronoff of Ann Arbor, MI.
Never one to follow the conventional path, Eileen was ahead of her time. Divorced in 1969, she was fiercely opposed to the Vietnam War and a proud feminist. She was Ms. Lurie as soon as that was an option. Eileen was strong willed, brave, funny, and smart in so many ways.
She was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, attended Yeshivah Flatbush, and graduated from Brandeis University. She received her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. Eileen was a passionate and gifted teacher who founded and directed the preschool at Congregation B’nai Israel in Milburn, NJ. An educator at heart, she then continued to teach children Hebrew and Sunday School and also teach aspiring teachers at local universities. Eileen, a voracious reader, also spent hours on the computer playing word games. She was a life-long learner and adventurer who loved travel and museums and movies. Her happy place was being in bed, watching tv, taking remote classes, and eating ice cream.
Eileen was an inspiration to her three daughters and three granddaughters. She was deeply loved by her friends and family and will be greatly missed.
Eileen’s funeral service will be held at 1PM, Thursday, January 25, 2024 at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill, 824 Washington Street in Canton, with the interment to follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
Shiva will be held at the Berger family home on Thursday immediately following the burial until 8:30 PM and continuing Friday between 2 and 5 PM.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Eileen’s memory to World Wildlife Fund (worldwildlife.org) or to DOROT’s University without Walls (dorotusa.org)
