Esther Molly Cohen February 6, 2023

Esther M. Cohen, a longtime Brockton resident, passed away on Monday, February 6, at 82 years of age. She grew up in Watertown, the daughter of the late David and Louise (Huberman) Bick with her younger sister and brother. She attended Watertown Public Schools and graduated from Watertown High School. She met Mel Cohen on a blind date, it was love at first sight and they were married within the year. They lived in Brockton where they raised their family welcoming their first daughter Pamela and was joined by her sister Janice and their brother Daniel completing Esther and Mel’s family. Esther played tennis as a young wife and mother. Esther volunteered at the library where her children attended elementary school. She and Mel traveled extensively visiting many countries in Europe and Israel. Esther was an expert in quilting, knitting and sewing and was sometimes accompanied by her daughter Janice and was joined by both of her daughters as they all enjoyed line dancing. Esther was artistic and creative as expressed in her beautiful calligraphy she created for her children’s Bat and Bar Mitzvah invitations and later the wedding invitations for her daughter Janice. During elections Esther worked at polling locations where she was responsible for verifying the names and addresses of voters as they entered the polling location. She and Mel loved spending time with their grandchildren especially on their annual visits to Ogunquit, Maine. In her mid-40’s Esther earned an Associates Degree from Massasoit Community College in furtherance of her librarian responsibilities at the Brockton Public Library. Esther, never one to sit still, volunteered to read to young children at the Arnone Elementary School. She and Mel enjoyed going to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Fuller Crafts Museum in Brockton. They attended many performances of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra. They were season ticket holders for performances at the South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset. Esther was an avid reader and belonged to a few book clubs. She was an active and involved participant at the Brockton Council on Aging where she pursued her creative artistic talents in the many beautiful paintings she made at her time there. It also afforded an opportunity for her other passion, playing Mahjong and taking many of the day trips that were offered by the Brockton Council on Aging. Among her many talents was her love of baking muffins, cookies, brownies and pastries. She loved gardening both in her home and outside. She and Mel were longtime active members of Temple Beth Emunah where she was a member of the Sisterhood. She and Mel shared a wonderful and full life together for 45 years until his passing in 2008. Esther is survived by her children, Pamela Cohen of Brockton, Janice O’Neil and her husband Brian of East Taunton and Daniel and his husband Andrew Dehel of Philadelphia, PA. She was the cherished grandmother of Danielle, Michael and Ethan. She is survived by her sister Dorothy Stecker and her husband Floyd of Maryland and her brother Harry Bick and his wife Marilyn of Texas.

Funeral Services will be held at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill on Thursday, February 9, at 10AM followed by burial at the Pride of Brockton Cemetery, 197 South Street, Stoughton. Memorial observance following the burial will be at the home of Richard and Marilyn Cohen through Thursday evening. In lieu of flowers donations in Esther’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
