Melvin Frankel, age 96, passed away on July 4, 2022, at Orchard Cove in Canton, MA. Mel was born in Bethlehem, PA on Jan. 30, 1926.
A veteran of WWII, he joined the US Navy and survived a kamikaze attack while serving on the USS New Mexico. Mel graduated from Penn State University where he met his wife, the late Norma Sue (Goodman) Frankel. He eventually ended up in retail store management, working for Zayre and raising his family in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA.
Mel and his family moved to Sharon, MA in 1972 and he managed the Bradlees in Fall River for many years. A very happy retiree, Mel was a prolific painter, enjoyed playing poker, and was a sports fan. He and Norma moved to Orchard Cove in 2005, where he arranged for and curated the hallway gallery that now displays resident artwork. Mel always had a song in his heart that he was ready to share.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Dora Frankel, his sister Eleanor Frankel Davis, his wife Norma, and his granddaughter Marly Robin Frankel. He is survived by his children Lisa (Doug) Errico and Gerald (June) Frankel, his grandchildren Alison (Andrew Del Donno) Errico, Jesse (Joanna) Errico, and Dana and Sasha Frankel, and his great-granddaughter Eve Errico.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Orchard Cove Employee Scholarship fund, 1 Del Pond Dr., Canton, MA 02021. The funeral will be at the Chapel, on the grounds of Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham St. at 2:00 on July 8.

July 6, 2022 at 6:25 pmA positive Covid test is keeping me from attending in person, but I’m giving virtual hugs to all of you. Mel had to be the kindest soul I ever knew. Always soft spoken and with a kind word…his personality is even evident in his art (which I feel lucky to be able to look at daily!) I think of Mel every week at poker and miss him very much.
