Shirley Gesserman of Canton, MA (formerly of Delray Beach, FL) passed away on May 4, 2024. She was 96 years of age.
Devoted daughter of the late Louis and Frances (Goodman) Brooks. Beloved wife of Samuel (deceased) for 73 years. Loving mother of Barry Gesserman and his wife Miriam, Burton Gesserman and his wife Dianne, and Susan (Gesserman) Phillips. Cherished grandmother of Jonathan Gesserman (Adina), Aron Gesserman (Rivkah), Leah Nadler (Hillel), Lauren Smith (Adam), Rachel Gesserman (Ja’So Shotts), Daniel Phillips, Sara Phillips (Evan Garza), and the late Matthew Phillips. Cherished great‐grandmother of Evan and Ben Smith, Nosson, Rochel, Meir, Tziporah, Chani, and Shmuel Gesserman, Sara, Ahuva, Moshe, Hendee, and Chani Nadler, and Moshe, Zahava, Rikki, Racheli, and Yehuda Gesserman. Dear sister of Annette Davis.
Shirley grew up in Dorchester, MA and was a 1945 graduate of Dorchester High School. She later earned an Associate Degree from Quincy Junior College. Shirley married Sam in 1947 and they moved to Milton, MA in 1956 where they raised their three children. In 1972 they moved to Randolph, MA, and in 1986 settled in Delray Beach, FL where they lived for 35 years. Shirley returned to Massachusetts in 2022.
She worked as a secretary in a CPA firm from 1945-1949, and as a part-time bookkeeper for a variety of organizations from 1951-1980.
Shirley lived life to its fullest, and her interests included bridge, singing, dancing, travel, golf, theater, movies, cooking, and entertaining friends. Shirley was a member of B’nai B’rith, and joined its choral group, The Mayflower Chorus. She sang with the chorus for over 20 years, including performances with Jimmy Durante, Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, and on Boston’s public television station, Channel 2. She was an active member and President of the Ladies Golf Association at the Boca Delray Golf Club. She traveled extensively, including trips to Israel (twice), Italy, China, Japan, Singapore and Bali.
Services for Shirley will be held at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill, 824 Washington St., Canton, MA on Monday, May 6th at 1:00PM. Interment to follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
