Robert S. Shuman, 87, passed in Cambridge MA on Friday night, surrounded by family.
Mr. Shuman was a longtime resident of Randolph MA, where he was an independent Master Electrician. He also worked for the New England Sinai Hospital. He later moved to Swansea MA, until recently moving back up to the South Shore.
Originally hailing from Lorne St. in Dorchester, “Bobby,” as his friends and family called him, joined the US Navy in 1955, and served aboard the Essex class aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea (CV-47), where he performed maintenance on various aircraft. He married Geraldine Feinberg in 1960 and settled in Randolph. Mr. Shuman was a past president of the Brotherhood of the Young Israel synagogue. Later in life, he also became known as “Papa,” married Cheryl Dennis and moved to Swansea.
Mr. Shuman is survived by his sister, Elaine and her husband Bernie Stone, of Boynton Beach FL, his sons Richard and his wife, Mary, of Weymouth and Jonathan and his wife, Melissa, of Huntsville AL, step children Kimberly and Doug Thorman of FL, Christy and Warren Knight of Somerset, Rebecca Ouelette of FL and Dana and Donna Dennis of FL. Papa had twenty grandchildren, Patrick and his wife Alison, Anna, Joshua, Breena, Nicholas, Matthew, Abigail, Isabella, Cameron, Ashley, Brandon, Taryn, Zachary, Devon, Kayla, Lexi, Ciara, Alaric and Aiden. He was predeceased by his brother Jackie, his wives Geri and Cheryl and his son Jack.
A funeral service will be held graveside on Monday, October 11, at 2:00, at the Agudas Israel cemetery on Baker St. in West Roxbury. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob’s name to the National Kidney Foundation.
