Irving Murstein, formerly of Weymouth for 46 years passed away on Monday, March 6, 2023. He was 89 years old. He was the son of the late Morris and Judith (Rice) Murstein. Loving father of Brenda DiSessa Gabrielle and her husband Tom Gabrielle of Clinton and cherished grandfather of John J. DiSessa and James D. DiSessa of Clinton. He was the brother of the late Rosamond Gilman. He leaves behind his former wife Jeannette along with many cousins and lifelong friends. His cousins, Soynia Reis and her daughter Rachel Frydman, were taken from the Vilna/Vilnius Ghetto in Lithuania to a concentration camp and perished there in 1942.
Born in 1933 in Jamaica Plain, he grew up in Dorchester and Mattapan. He attended Sarah Greenwood Elementary School, Oliver Wendell Holmes Junior High and graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School for Boys in 1952. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University Class of 1963.
He was a Korean Veteran serving in Germany for the Fighting 69th Infantry Division of the US Army.
Irving began his work life delivering meat for the Prime Butcher Store on Blue Hill Avenue, Kaiser Meat Market on Erie Street, Columbia Meat Packing Company, the Worcester Paper Box Co, Pullman Vacuum and Famous Furniture Company. He later worked for Northeastern Distributors and John Donnelly Billboard Advertising Co. He worked for the Massachusetts State Welfare Department and retired from the State Public Utilities Dept. in 1985.
He was actively involved in Ward 14 Boston politics. Irving wrote the Massachusetts. Generic Drug Law in 1970 and the law to ban kerosene portable spaceheaters.
A Graveside Funeral service under the direction of Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill will be held at the Temple Beth Emunah section of the Plymouth Rock Cemetery, 1000 Pearl Street, Brockton, MA on Wednesday, March 8, at 11AM.
