Greta (Shier) Caplan of Needham, formerly of Newton, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 95 years of age. Greta was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of the Isidore & Fanie (Scharf) Shier. She was the beloved wife of the late Lorimer “Lory” Y Caplan and was the loving mother Barry & Judith Freedman Caplan, Fran Caplan & David Eisenberg and Cheryl & Michael Foilb. Greta was the cherished grandmother of Adam & Michele, Benji, Sara and Josh Eisenberg, Allison & Nick Worley, and Zachary Foilb. She was the proud great-grandmother “GG” of Jacob, Amelia “Mila” and Noah Eisenberg and Levi Worley. Greta was the dear sister of the late Irving & Sylvia Shier and Reva & Morris Soloway and was a loving aunt to her many nieces and nephews in Canada, Florida, and Maryland. She was a devoted friend to many. Greta was an adored and dedicated pre-school teacher at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Newton for many years. Greta enjoyed having her children and grandchildren gather when she hosted her weekly Friday evening Shabbat dinners. She enjoyed making chicken soup, playing mahjong and spending time with her family. Services will take place at the Chapel at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon on Sunday, January 14th at 10:00am. Shiva will be held following the burial at the home of Fran Caplan and David Eisenberg until 4 pm and will continue at their home Sunday 7-9 pm, Monday 4-8 pm and Tuesdayand Wednesday 7-9 pm with nightly minyan at 7:30pm. Shiva continues at the home of Barry and Judith Caplan on Thursday with minyan at 7;30 pm and Friday until 2pm.
