Edith Miriam Yoffa passed away at the age of 100 on May 08, 2023. She was the matriarch of the Selkowitz and Yoffa families and shared a wonderful marriage for 49 years with husband Yana. She always remembered family birthdays and took an active interest in her nieces’ and nephews’ lives. Over the past 17 years she resided at Fuller Village in Milton, MA where she participated in many events such as weekly Mah Jongg games with her dear friends.
She was born in Norwich, CT to Lena and Isadore Selkowitz, and was sister to Morris and Israel. She is survived by three children Barbara, Joyce, and Joseph (married to the late Robin Monihan Yoffa); four granddaughters Marissa (m. Michael Nichols), Laura and Rachel Dinsdale, and Hannah (m. Corey Meierovics), and three great grandchildren Evelyn and Zoe Nichols and Arlo Meierovics.
As an active member of her Synagogue Sisterhood Edith knitted beautiful mittens for the community. Edith loved having family and friends for Passover Seders and Rosh Hashanah dinners. She welcomed friends of her children into her home where she and Yana taught their family to respect every race and religion. She hosted a yearly barbeque for family and friends in Hyde Park, MA on her birthday, the Fourth of July.
After retiring Edith volunteered at the Boston Aid for the Blind. She read to members and accompanied them to the Boston Pops. She delighted in classical music, live theater, and opera. Throughout her life Edith was an avid Red Sox fan, and passed this love on to her daughter Barbara, and her daughters and granddaughters. She loved Joseph’s fresh caught fish and lobsters. She attended a memorable performance of Blue Man Group with Joyce.
Edith lived through many notable events in her 100 years. Two prominent memories were the Hurricane of 1938 when the Thames River flooded her father’s store in Norwich, CT, and The Blizzard of 1978 when Yana was stuck on Route 128 and did not return for three days.
Edith will be greatly missed by her family, extended family, and many wonderful friends.
There will be a funeral service at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill, 824 Washington Street, Canton on Friday, May 12, 2023 at 11AM with the interment to follow at Lindwood Memorial Park, 490 North Street, Randolph.
