SLOTNICK, Carl Bruce, of Cambridge, formerly of Cohasset, passed peacefully in his home in Cambridge with the love of his life, his wife, Merilyn (De Cesare) and his family by his side. Born in Dorchester, Carl graduated from Randolph High and UMass Amherst, and after attending law school and film school went into the family business, Alco Auto Parts in Jamaica Plain, established by his father and mother, Albert & Helen Slotnick, and now run by his brother.
Carl was an athlete, running track in high school and college, before taking up tennis later in life, with his speed, determination and intelligence making “Captain Carl” (as he was affectionately known), a formidable fixture from the hard courts of Milton High to the clay courts he loved at Hingham Tennis Club. Carl had a lifelong love for theatre, acting, music and soulful harmonica playing. He commanded attention in any room with his easy wit, brilliant mind and seemingly endless stores of knowledge, but was often happiest in his garden in Cranston, trimming his topiaries and walking his cats.
Above all else, Carl’s pride and joy was his family – his children Marjorie Wampole Gay and Thomas Gay, Caroline Wampole & Cedric Pilard, Caleb Slotnick, Josiah & Melissa Edmon Slotnick, Laura Slotnick Krouch and Veronica deVos Larkins & Craig Larkins; his grandchildren Joseph James, Kosaul, Moniha, Dega, Maya, Liliana, Jacob, RisaMaya and Rishan; and his beloved siblings Barbara Slotnick Karp & Stan Karp, and Charles Slotnick & Laura Woolpert.
After a valiant almost 3 decade battle with cancer, Carl will be remembered for his stoic determination to live, work and provide for those he cared about most. Celebration of Life Service at Schlossberg & Solomon Memorial Chapel, 824 Washington St., Canton, on Sunday, November 10, at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heifer International Foundation: https://www.heifer.org/give/one-time.html; or Alley Cat Rescue: https://www.saveacat.org/donate.html.
