Barry Leon Lewis of Brockton, formerly of Dorchester, passed away at home after a lengthy illness surrounded by his loving family, on February 26, 2025, at the age of 83. Devoted son of Morris and Ethel Lewis. Beloved husband of 60 years to Celia (Baker) Lewis. Loving father of Joy Almekies and her partner Joe Varao, Debbie Moukit and her husband Morris, and Kim Bodemer and her husband Brian. Cherished grandfather of Lia Almekies, Benjamin Almekies and his wife Avigail and Shira Almekies, Max Moukit, and Elizabeth Moukit, Rachel McDade and her husband Zachary, Chelsea Galley and her husband Chris, and Elaine Bodemer. Devoted great-grandfather to Hallel, Emmett, and Aaron.
The center of Barry’s universe was his loving family. He cherished spending holidays together, leading seders, singing during car trips, and spending time with friends and family. A lifelong educator, Barry committed himself to working with students with learning differences and helping to make learning, of all kinds, accessible. He instilled a deep love and commitment to Judaism to his family, leading by example – attending services regularly, celebrating holidays, and taking on a variety of leadership roles – even serving as Temple President. Barry loved to dance and in his younger years he and his wife Celia made quite an impression on the dance floor. Although Parkinson’s disease made dancing difficult in his later years, he reached his goal of dancing with his granddaughters at their weddings last year– giving him so much joy.
Barry was cared for and cared about by so many. His family is so incredibly grateful for the support they received from the amazing caregivers at Old Colony Hospice and Abbott Home Health Care.
Services will be held at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill 824 Washington Street Canton MA 02021, Sunday March 2nd , 2025 at 1:30PM followed by interment at Beth El Cemetery 776 Baker Street West Roxbury.
