Judith Winer December 17, 2024

Date of Funeral

December 20, 2024

Judith Lennox Winer, born June 23rd, 1943, entered into rest on December 17th, 2024, with her daughter Debbie by her side.  She was married for 51 years to her late husband, Steve Winer and is survived by her son, David Winer, and her daughter Deborah Harmon and her husband Paul V. Harmon; her grandson Jake Harmon; and her lifelong friend Joan Otto (Thompson) who was like another sister to her and her husband Fred of Marston Mills. She is also survived by Sharona, Liora, and Ethan Bensorek, her nieces and nephew, and many cousins. Judy was predeceased by her parents, Bruce & Doris (Carlson) Lennox and her older sister Elizabeth “Ibby” Lennox.

Judy met her husband Steve when they both worked for Hallmark Cards in Boston. They were married in October of 1966 and had two children. They moved to Sharon in 1970. While Steve was on the road, Judy took care of their home and their children.  She schlepped the children to Hebrew school and their various activities (sports, scouts, etc.).

After moving to Sharon, she started working at Come & Play nursery school. During this time, she became a long-distance runner and won many medals and trophies for various 5K & 10K races. In 1981, she ran the Newport Marathon for the first time. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to finish the race due to a broken pelvis and had to drop out just after the 21-mile mark.  She ran again two years later and finished; this was one of her proudest achievements.  On her 40th birthday, her husband took out a full page ad in the local paper that said “Look Out Runners, Judy Winer is now 40!!” She met and made many friends while running and she worked the finish line at the Boston Marathon for many years.

Judy’s two closest friends were her older sister, Ibby, and Joan. Both Ibby and Joan called Judy by her middle name, Elva, which Judy hated (which is probably why they called her that).  Whenever the three of them got together, there was lots of fun to be had and trouble to be caused!

Judy spent parts of every summer since 1962 in Pemaquid, Maine. She loved being with her family and spending time relaxing on the coast. Unfortunately, this year marked the first year that she was unable to go due to her dementia, though she was with her family in spirit.

Judy was diagnosed with dementia at the start of the Covid pandemic in March of 2020. She sold her house in Sharon in December of that year and moved 2 miles from her daughter to Artisan at Hudson. She had an Independent Living apartment, made many new friends, and rarely missed happy hour.  Unfortunately, her dementia progressed, and she had to move to the Memory Care unit in April of this year, and by autumn was unable to walk even short distances. She passed away peacefully this past week.

Through it all, Judy never lost her wonderful sense of humor and her ability to laugh, especially at herself. Her late husband often said that it was never a dull moment with her around!  And though she grew frustrated with her dementia, she was still able to laugh.
