Pola Stryer (nee Borin), 75, of Stoughton MA, formerly of Havana, Cuba, passed away after a long illness on November 27th, 2023. Beloved wife of 53 years to Mark L. Stryer; loving mother to son, Derick M. Stryer of Revere and his daughter with Sally Carlos of Southboro, MA, Emme Stryer. Pola was also a dear sister to Bertha Borin of Revere, Rebecca Hughes of Stoneham and her daughter with Ken Hughes of Salina, OK, Diána R. Hughes, Isaac Borin of Revere, and the late Sonia Borin.
Pola was born in Havana, Cuba in 1948 to Bernardo and Esther Borin (Detinco). She fled Havana in 1962 with Operation Peter Pan, a clandestine exodus of over 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban minors ages 6 to 18 to the United States over a two-year span from 1960 to 1962. Pola was sent to live with her maternal grandparents in Mattapan, MA after her parents feared that Fidel Castro and the Communist party were planning to terminate parental rights and place minors in communist indoctrination centers. Her parents and remaining siblings soon followed in 1964.
Pola graduated from Boston Business School and then went on to meet her husband, Mark, and married in 1970.
Her granddaughter, Emme, was definitely the light in her life and Nana will be missed tremendously.
