Peter Schron of Norwood, formerly of Slingerlands, NY, passed away peacefully after battling pancreatic cancer on January 29, 2023, at 41 years of age. Devoted son of Barbara Schron & Steven Schron, middle brother to Amy and Andrew, beloved Uncle to Jordan and Jolie and brother-in-law to Jason Diaz.
Peter grew up in Slingerlands, NY and attended Bethlehem Central High School and SUNY Plattsburgh. He spent his adult career as an educational aide to students and young adults with Autism and other developmental disorders. Peter was a devoted Raiders (BO KNOWS!), extreme Phish and hot sauce fan. Peter was the wittiest, funniest and master of the best one-line zingers you have ever heard. Every person he came in contact with, including the nurses up to his last day were amazed by his spirit, dry sense of humor, wit and ability to prank us all. He truly was one of a kind.
Pete was diagnosed with Stage Four Pancreatic Cancer on November 2, 2022 and fought so hard for the short time he had left. He never complained… literally, ever from the start to end.
Even as a child, Peter was the most easy-going, roll with the punches kind of little He-man, Master of the Universe, worshipping little dude. He was always with friends, never wanting to be the center of attention but always the one with the shocking one-liner that you just simply would never forget. Guaranteed, if you knew Peter, you have a story involving a comment he made that you just had to sit with for a moment, not knowing if he was kidding or serious (including his oncologist and nurses).
Pete was the most amazing son, brother, uncle and friend. You could count on him to calm the mood; make you laugh and find a way to turn the conversation to football. He was notorious for ‘leaving a trail’. If he tried to sneak something…he would get caught. It was inevitable and expected. If there was food, he would eat it. Andrew once convinced Peter that dirt from a plant on the counter was Oreo cookie crumbs…. And he ate them. That was Peter. The fight heard round the world (okay, Slingerlands & Delmar) involved Peter picking Andrew up to grab Gold Coin (if you know, you know), and Andrew made him wait a few minutes before getting to the car. POP…. A tiny love tap to Andrew’s nose and a ‘broken nose’ diagnosis the next day. Again, Peter did not mess around when it came to food.
Throughout his completely unexpected short cancer diagnosis and fight, Peter showed more strength, courage and dignity that should be possible. He was so strong, so funny, so altruistic, so empathetic and compassionate for others. If he needed to use the nurse call button, he would then apologize profusely for interrupting them. He had nurses in on his pranks. He had a spark that just made people love him without any intention of doing so. Because of that, he felt so much love and support from so many different people from all phases of his life. Within five short days of his last hospital stay, he bonded so hard with his 79-year-old roommate and his family, that we know we will stay in touch for life. He had so much support from so many different people. His fellow teachers and students throughout his career have reached out with so many stories that all end the same way. Everyone was mesmerized with the amount of patience and compassion that Peter had for all. That he could make anyone, and everyone laugh and even on his toughest days, he was still only concerned for the inconvenience of those around him.
Peter’s friends from elementary, high school and college rallied around him so hard throughout his battle. His best few days were when his friends brought his favorite food to Norwood and watched football games together. We were group texting all day and I learned via his friends that he had consumed ‘maybe 15 or more hot dogs’. That’s our Peter.
While nobody knew his last day would end up being early Sunday morning on January 29th, 2023, we are so grateful that he did not have to continue to suffer. With this cancer, there would be no happy ending and the road would have gotten even bumpier and uglier. While we will all suffer from his loss, he will no longer be suffering. His last evening, Saturday, Jan 28th, his dear friend, Chris, came to visit from Florida. They spent the evening in the hospital room watching the Celtics win in overtime. “The best two words in the English language…. Overtime”. Quote of the century by Peter Donald (duck) Schron. Peter texted at 11:30pm saying he was having a ‘great night and felt really good’ and forced Chris to send some friends an inappropriate final hospital prank text. That was the end. He wouldn’t have it any other way.
Thank you to everyone in Peter’s life that gave him so much joy and so many memories in his short 41 years. Friends and family are the most important and he valued and cherished every single person. He was able to donate his corneal tissue and will allow someone who lost their vision due to metastasized cancer be able to see again. Will that person only be able to see The Raiders and hot dogs??? He is reunited with Dylan (his best friend Yorkipoo) now and is probably planning more pranks while throwing the tennis ball up in the air for his Dillydog. He is at peace and no longer suffering. We love him so much and will never stop.
In his honor, please pay it forward and show some extra patience and compassion to people. His kindness will go a long way and will live on through all of us.
Peter’s memorial service will be held at 10AM, Thursday, February 02, 2023, at Schlossberg Family’s Chapel on the Hill, 824 Washington Street in Canton.
An informal, relaxing Celebration of Life will be held at the Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton following the memorial service from Noon-3PM. Please do not feel like you need to get dressed up. Peter would want us to be casual, smiling and together.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Peter’s memory to:
