Sherman Baker July 17, 2019

 

of South Yarmouth, formerly of Canton, Stoughton and Holbrook passed away at his home on Monday, July 15, 2019 at 90 years of age. Born in Boston on June 23, 1929, Sherman was the third of four children born to Elizabeth (Verovsky) Baker and Samuel Baker.  He attended Roxbury Memorial High School class of 1945.  He was discharged from the Army National Guard in 1952, graduating from Boston University with a BS/BA in Business from the GI Bill. While at BU, he was active with the Crew Team as Team Manager and Coxswain and an active member at Hillel, instrumental in implementing the first Kosher Kitchen at the Hillel House at BU. Mr. Baker had a 40 year career in insurance, initially with Boit, Dalton and Church (Boston), staying through its mergers with Frank B. Hall and Aon Corporation, retiring as Vice President in 1994. Sherman was a Life Member of Grand Lodge of Masons in MA, Past Master of Zerubbabel Lodge AF&AM and present member of Marine Lodge, Falmouth, MA.  He was active in many community organizations including advisor to Junior Achievement of Eastern MA, past Chairman of the Insurance Committee for Town of Canton, MA; member of Canton Civil Defense Corp.  After moving to Cape Cod he became active in the Yarmouth-Dennis “Community Emergency Response Team” (CERT). Graduated from Yarmouth Citizen Police Academy and instrumental in the founding of the Yarmouth (Police) Citizen’s Advisory Team acting as its first Chairman (YPCAT).Under his “watch” at YPCAT, the ‘Yarmouth Police Foundation’ was created to benefit outreach programs of the Yarmouth Police Department. A member of the Coast Guard Auxillary for 30 years, holding various staff positions and leading boating safety instruction. He was the husband of Elinor (Perlis) Baker, the “Love of His Life” recently celebrating 62 years of marriage. He was the father of David A. Baker and his wife Barbara of Stoughton, MA and Alyse Baker-Boncaldo and husband Philip Boncaldo of Braintree, MA and was the grandfather of Benjamin. Funeral service at Schlossberg Memorial Chapel, 824 Washington St., Canton on Wednesday, July 17 at 11:30AM. Burial to follow at Beth El Cemetery, 776 Baker St., West Roxbury. Memorial observance at the home of Alyse Baker-Boncaldo and Philip Boncaldo following the burial and continuing Thursday 1pm-4pm and 7pm-8pm and Friday 1pm-4pm.
