Melvin Silver, a lifelong resident of Quincy, died peacefully on Friday September 6 at the Brockton VA Hospital. He was 99. Mr. Silver was the loving husband of the late Gloria Faith (Pollack) Silver.
Born in Milton on June 27, 1920, Mr. Silver was the devoted son of the late Jacob and Celia (Berger) Silver. He proudly served in the US Air Force during WWII as a Control Tower Operator at several Air Force Bases throughout the US. Mr. Silver assisted in the directing of the taking off and landing of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military aviators in the US Armed Forces. Mr. Silver was also proud to be a 3rd generation Quincy resident and was the longtime owner and operator of the Artery Motor Mart in Quincy until his retirement over 36 years ago.
Mr. Silver is survived by his loving daughters, Jodi Silver of Quincy and Connie Lesch & her husband Joel of Maryland. He is also survived by his dear grandchildren, Travis, Austin and Hannah.
Funeral service Military Honors will take place in the VA National Cemetery, Connery Avenue in Bourne on Tuesday Sept. 10 at 10am.
