NEWMAN, Susan G (Portnoy)

of San Mateo, CA, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2018. Born in Cambridge on August 30, 1945, she was the daughter of Helene Portnoy of Boston, who survives her, and the late Abraham (Bert) Portnoy. Susan showed exceptional musical talent at an early age, winning several competitions, honors and scholarships, and entered Boston University School for the Arts as a piano major. Expanding her horizons, she graduated as music major from the College of Arts and Sciences, and for three years taught school in both Boston and Los Angeles.Ever curious and ever gregarious, she moved on to other fields, and for several years worked for a travel agency leading safaris to Tanzania, as well as group travel to the more usual destinations in Europe. She worked with major hotel chains (Marriott and Hyatt among them) to develop multimedia conferencing for their corporate clients, and later she brought this experience to Stanford University.At her death she worked for the department of Regulatory Compliance at Gilead Sciences.As well as being a devoted daughter, Susan was a cherished sister to her brother Kenneth Portnoy and his wife Andrea of Marblehead, her sister Miriam Hatoum and her husband Joe of Framingham, her brother Daniel of Atlantic Beach, FL, and her former sister-in-law Joan Portnoy of Denville NJ.She was a loving aunt to Ida Moeller and her husband Chris of Marshfield, Elizabeth Portnoy and her husband George Brown of Chicago, and her nephews Sami Hatoum of Framingham, Jeffrey Portnoy of Palm Beach Gardens FL and Andrew Portnoy of New York City. She was a loving great aunt to Piper and Owen Moeller, and William and Anne Brown. Susan is also survived by her aunt, Faye Sattin of Mount Pleasant SC.She will also be missed by her many cousins, her friends in Northern California, her cousin Donna Jauvtis, and her friend Thadine Clifton. Chapel service at Schlossberg & Solomon Memorial Chapel, 824 Washington St., Canton, MA on Friday, January 12th at 11 AM. At Susanís request, there will be no memorial observance. In lieu of flowers, Remembrances in her memory may be made to Sherrill House, 135 S. Huntington Ave., Boston MA 02130, or to Mission Hospice & Home Care, 1670 S.
